About Me

I am from a very early family in the region and Gt Gt Gt Grandfather was a carrier bringing goods to the few squatters in the region prior to the discovery of gold.

From a very early age I had a passion for history and a very enquiring mind not easily fulfilled even after reading countless volumes.  I attended university and became a materials scientist / industrial chemist before becoming a museum officer and now, presently, manager of the Bendigo Joss House Temple.

A passionate researcher and collector, I am currently researching my own family tree as well as the chemist profession here in Victoria from the 1840's onwards.  I co-present a radio program weekly on 106.7 Phoenix FM dedicated to histroical matters and oral histories pertaining to this region which has been going for nearly five years.

Dear Darren
I look forward to the upcoming exhibition on 'Great Pillers of the Community' and hope to catch your talk on dispensing chemists and 'medical men' of early Bendigo.
In your research have you come across John Barton Burstall, my Gt Gt Grandfather? Although using the title 'Dr' he seems to have had a chemist's shop at White Hills from the 1850s and later at Golden Square. Any information you have would be appreciated. I'm wondering about his training, or apprenticeship or registration as an apothecary. I have researched his later exploits; he was quite a colourful character!
Regards. Helen
